Under construction since 2008, the
$787 million annex to the Pennsylvania
Convention;Center in downtown
Philadelphia is finally complete. Officially
opened during a March 4 ribbon-cutting
ceremony, the expansion — which is one
of the largest public works projects ever
undertaken by the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania — increases the facility’s
footprint by 62 percent. It includes 935,000
square feet of brand-new usable space,
including more than 528,000 square feet
of new contiguous exhibit space, 23 new
meeting rooms, three new exhibit halls
and a new 56,000-square-foot ballroom, all
of which give the facility the rare ability to
simultaneously host two citywide conventions under one roof. The Pennsylvania
Convention Center Authority will host
an official national grand opening celebration for the expanded Pennsylvania
Convention Center next month.
