Association Forum’s 2012 awards
nomination process officially opens this
month. The winners will be selected in
early 2012 and recognized in June dur-
ing Association Week 2012 — a celebra-
tion of associations in Chicago — at the
Annual Meeting and Honors Gala. For

It’s never too early to think about which
of your colleagues deserve to be recog-
nized for exceptional achievements and
contributions to the association manage-
ment profession! By nominating a peer,
you help to advance the professional
practice of association management.
The awards presently include:
Samuel B. Shapiro Award for Chief
Staff Executive Achievement
The highest honor the Association Forum
bestows on an association professional,
the Samuel B. Shapiro Award for Chief
Staff Executive Achievement is presented
to a CEO for outstanding service and
accomplishments in association/nonprof-it management. The award is named after
Samuel B. Shapiro, CAE, a past chairman
of the Association Forum and ASAE.
Recipients of this award have made outstanding accomplishments in their professional and personal lives.
The 2011 recipient is Mark
Engle, D.M., FASAE,
principal, Association
Management Center and
CEO, Metal Construction
Association.
John C. Thiel Distinguished Service
Award
The John C. Thiel Distinguished Service
Award is presented for outstanding
service to the Association Forum by an
individual association or supplier partner
member. This award has been presented
for exceptional, long-term volunteer ser-

vice to the Association Forum, primarily
through committee service or similar
contributions. “Unsung hero” or “above
and beyond the call of duty” are two ways
to describe past recipients. This award
is named in memory of the late John
C. Thiel, CAE, the Association Forum’s
chairman-elect in 1990-91.

Association Professional Achievement
Award
This award is presented to an Association
Forum member for exemplary service and
outstanding accomplishments in association management. Given to an association staff member — not a CEO — it
recognizes in its recipient a high level of
commitment to professional growth, as
well as personal pride in the association
management profession.
The 2011 recipient is Laura
Metcalf Jelinek, CAE,
director, meetings, confer-
ences and travel, Easter
Seals Inc.
Inspiring Leader Award
The Inspiring Leader Award is presented
to an individual who has established a
culture leading to employee satisfaction,
motivation, engagement and achievement.
The 2011 recipient is Dawn
Glossa, director of communications, American Society
of Anesthesiologists.

The Association Forum of Chicagoland
Foundation awards this scholarship to
one young meeting planner to attend the
Professional Convention Management
Association's annual meeting, held each
January. The program consists of intense
educational programming balanced with
social events offering unlimited association networking opportunities. Named
after the late D. Michael Ferguson, former
senior director of programs and meetings at the Million Dollar Round Table,
the scholarship is funded by the MDRT
Foundation.
Eligibility
• Applicants must be Association Forum
members.
• Applicants must be employed at Chicagoland associations in the meeting
planning field with a minimum of three
years of industry experience.
• Applications will be considered based
on financial need and contributions to
the meeting planning field.
