North Park University
North Park University in Chicago offers
association executives a variety of programs for professional development,
including workshops, a boot camp for
new nonprofit CEOs, webinars and an
annual symposium. Participants can
focus their studies in one specific area
of nonprofit management or they can
take a broader approach. Workshops are
available for a variety of skill and experience levels, depending on what best
serves the learner.
Foremost among them is the University’s Certificate in Nonprofit Management, administered by the University’s
Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management. It provides comprehensive preparation in the primary functional areas of
a nonprofit organization. The curriculum includes more than 20 programs
on a variety of subjects, including governance, technology, marketing, fundraising, human resources and others.
Participants are required to complete
seven workshops to earn the certificate.
Association executives who wish to
sharpen their knowledge and skills in a
targeted content area can earn a graduate certificate in fundraising management, nonprofit governance, nonprofit
finance or nonprofit marketing management through the university’s School of
Business and Nonprofit Management.
Course credits from this program may
be applied to any of the school’s graduate degrees.
All certificate programs can be completed within six to 12 months online,
in person or a combination of both
formats. The tuition for the 2011-2012
academic year is $2,070 per course.

Grand Valley State University
Grand Valley State University in southwestern Michigan also offers an online
option. The Graduate Certificate in
Nonprofit Leadership, established 15
years ago, is a 15-credit graduate-level
program consisting of four courses and
three workshops taken sequentially from
